Question: Some people think that robots are very important to human’s future development, while others think they are dangerous and have negative effects on society. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
(IELTS Academic – 28/12/2024)
ANSWER (8.0+):
It is sometimes asserted that robots play a crucial role in human development, while opponents maintain that they are perilous and bring about adverse societal effects. In this essay, I will discuss both perspectives and explain why I lean towards the former opinion.
On the one hand, robots can be dangerous to an extent. The foremost concern is over-reliance on robots, which might disrupt human interactions and relationships. For example, in Japan, the prevalence of robotic companions has led some individuals to prefer these artificial partners over building meaningful relationships with other people, resulting in social isolation. Furthermore, there are concerns about robots potentially outsmarting humans and demanding autonomy. This possibility has been highlighted by figures like Elon Musk, who warned about the risks of unchecked advancements in artificial general intelligence.
On the other hand, robots are undeniably important for several reasons. In the workplace, they can perform manual and hazardous tasks, reducing risks for human workers. For instance, robots are extensively used in car factories to handle repetitive or dangerous processes, such as assembling heavy machinery and welding. This not only enhances efficiency but also protects human workers from life-threatening situations. Moreover, robots significantly enhance convenience in households by taking over mundane chores. Devices like automatic vacuum cleaners equipped with advanced sensors exemplify how robots save time and energy for homeowners.
In conclusion, both sides of the argument have their merits. However, I believe that robots are predominantly beneficial, given their critical roles in improving efficiency at work and convenience at home. To mitigate potential risks, governments should establish clear regulations and ethical guidelines for robot research and deployment.
