Question: Crime rates are likely to decline due to the advancements in technology, which will help prevent and solve crimes in an easier way. Do you agree or disagree?
(IELTS Academic – 23/11/2024)
ANSWER (8.0+):
It is widely believed that advancements in technology will lead to a reduction in crime rates by enhancing the ability to both prevent and solve crimes. I largely agree with this perspective, as technology acts as a strong deterrent for potential offenders and serves as an indispensable resource for investigative authorities even though it can also be used by criminals.
The foremost rationale why I believe in the potential decline in crime rates is the implementation of advanced surveillance systems. Modern tools such as high-resolution cameras and facial recognition software make it increasingly difficult for criminals to evade detection. These technologies not only deter criminal behavior but also assist law enforcement in identifying and apprehending offenders with increased accuracy. For instance, since Beijing adopted smart surveillance systems, it has reported significant reductions in crimes such as theft and vandalism, as the heightened risk of being caught discourages potential offenders.
Moreover, I believe technological advancements have substantially improved the efficiency of solving crimes. Tools like genetic analysis and digital evidence recovery have transformed the landscape of criminal investigations. Even cold cases from decades ago can now be resolved, offering justice that was previously unattainable. The use of advanced investigative techniques not only prevents crime but also instills public confidence in the justice system’s capabilities.
Nevertheless, it is important to recognize that criminals can also misuse modern technology for malicious purposes. For example, sophisticated cybercriminals exploit technological innovations to commit online fraud and cybercrimes. In Vietnam, there has been a growing number of cases where individuals fall victim to cybercriminals who steal bank account details and illegally transfer funds, highlighting the downside of technological progress.
In conclusion, I generally support the view that technology contributes to lowering crime rates, thanks to its role in enhancing surveillance and improving crime-solving methods. However, the rise of cybercrimes serves as a reminder that governments must allocate sufficient resources to address these emerging threats and further strengthen public security.
