Question: Full-time university students spend a lot of time studying. Some say they should do other activities too. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
(IELTS Academic – 19/09/2024)
ANSWER (8.0+):
As students in tertiary institutions dedicate a substantial amount of time to their studies, it is sometimes argued that they should also participate in other activities. I partly agree with this assertion, as engaging in extracurricular activities can enhance valuable skills and improve mental well-being, although it may risk affecting academic performance.
The primary reason for my support of students taking on diverse responsibilities outside of school is the improvement of practical skills. Engaging in activities beyond the classroom provides opportunities to acquire essential skills not typically taught in academic settings. For example, students involved in anti-smoking campaigns in Vietnam reported improved abilities in deep listening and persuasion after interacting with heavy smokers and encouraging them to quit.
Another reason I endorse students’ involvement in various activities is the mental health benefits. Academic work, which often demands intense focus and analytical thinking, can be stressful. Therefore, it is important for students to spend some time on activities such as sports, socializing with friends, or participating in spiritual events to unwind. As a result, they can experience a refreshed state of mind and improved cognitive abilities, which can boost both their overall well-being and academic performance.
However, I recognize the potential risk of neglecting academic responsibilities. It is not uncommon for students to become overly involved in extracurricular activities to the point where they lack sufficient time for studying. This may be due to the appeal of these activities or the high level of commitment required for certain roles, such as being a club president. If this situation continues, it could lead to a decline in their academic performance.
In conclusion, I largely support the idea of encouraging university students to engage in various activities beyond their studies, as it helps them develop new skills and rejuvenate their minds, even though it may come at the cost of academic performance. I also believe that universities should provide students with tools and strategies to help them balance their academic, personal, and social lives.
