Question:  Some people think that the government should give financial support to creative artists such as musicians and painters. Others think that it is a waste of money. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

ANSWER (8.0+):

It is sometimes argued that state budgets should financially support artists, including painters and musicians, while opponents consider such assistance wasteful. In this essay, I will discuss both sides of the argument and explain why I lean toward the latter view.

On the one hand, there are valid reasons for governments to provide financial assistance to artists. Chief among these is their contribution to cultural preservation. Artistic works, such as paintings that depict traditional customs and habits, help pass cultural traditions down to younger generations, thereby reinforcing national identities. Moreover, government investment in artists can yield significant economic benefits. For instance, the Korean government’s funding for the training of young, talented singers and dancers in recent decades has led to the rise of world-famous bands like BTS and Black Pink. These artists have generated billions of dollars through album sales and concert tours, significantly boosting the national economy.

On the other hand, governmental financial support for artists can be seen as unjustifiable to some extent. The primary reason is its questionable necessity. Truly talented artists often find ways to succeed without government assistance. For example, Doan Nguyen, one of Vietnam’s most renowned painters, has capitalized on the popularity of social media to promote his unique painting style, successfully selling his masterpieces to art collectors across the country. Another concern is the existence of more urgent societal issues. Many nations are grappling with crises in education and healthcare that impact billions of lives worldwide. If state budgets are allocated more to art projects instead of addressing these pressing issues, it could lead to further deterioration of essential public services.

In conclusion, while both perspectives have merit, I oppose the idea of governments financially supporting artists due to its questionable necessity and the urgency of other priorities. In my view, governments should allocate more funds to address critical problems and introduce policies encouraging private entities to invest in the arts.
