Question: In some countries, it is illegal for companies to reject job applicants for their age. Is this a positive or negative development?
(IELTS Academic – 5/10/2024)
ANSWER (8.0+):
Age discrimination in recruitment has been made illegal in certain countries. In my estimation, this is largely a positive development, as it promotes social harmony and reduces financial strain on governments, even though it may pose some challenges for businesses.
The primary reason for my approval of the prohibition of age-based discrimination is that it fosters social fairness. In countries like Vietnam, this law ensures that job applicants are evaluated based on their qualifications and experience rather than their age, promoting a sense of equality. This helps to create a more inclusive society where every individual has equal opportunities to contribute, regardless of their age.
Another justification for why I believe this ban is beneficial is that it allows older professionals to remain financially independent. By securing employment, these individuals can contribute their skills and expertise to the workforce while earning a salary that enables them to support themselves. This reduces their reliance on government welfare programs, thereby easing the financial burden on national social security systems. In turn, this frees up resources that governments can allocate to other important sectors.
However, I also recognize that prohibiting age discrimination may present challenges for certain industries. Some jobs, such as those in construction, require significant physical strength and endurance, which younger workers are generally better suited for. As a result, companies in these fields may face difficulties if they are unable to for physically demanding roles, which could impact both productivity and workplace safety. In conclusion, I am of the opinion that banning age-based discrimination in recruitment is a mostly positive trend. It promotes social equality and helps older workers remain self-sufficient, although some companies might struggle to comply with the law. Therefore, such laws should be encouraged and adopted more widely around the world.
