Question: When asked to choose between a life without work and working most of the time, people would always choose not to work. Do you agree or disagree with this statement?
(IELTS Academic – 02/11/2024)
ANSWER (8.0+):
It is sometimes predicted that everyone would prefer a life without work responsibilities over one where work dominates their schedule. I largely disagree with this prediction due to the financial and emotional benefits offered by a career even though work-related stress can be an influencing factor.
The foremost rationale why I am against the assumption that people prefer not to work is financial gain. Benefits including monthly salaries and other incentives not only allow them to earn a living but also sustain their own families. Since most people know they would struggle financially without a job, that they would all choose not to work is unlikely.
Another reason for my rejection of the belief that people would certainly choose a life without a job lies in the sense of fulfillment. In reality, it is not rare for professionals to pursue a career since it gives their lives meaning. For instance, firefighters can take pride in saving lives from a burning house, and teachers feel valued when their students succeed. If these individuals were to abandon their duties, they might find their lives meaningless.
However, I acknowledge the role of stress in people’s preferences of lifestyle. This stems from the unbearable amount of tension that certain employees are suffering, breeding the desire to remove themselves from most professional commitments. In reality, a number of young Japanese are embracing the idea of joblessness. Instead of working excessive hours, they move to the countryside to lead self-sufficient lives, reporting elevated mental health due to the absence of constant deadlines and office conflicts.
In conclusion, I mostly reject that people would certainly prefer not to work when given a choice between a life without work and one filled mostly with work as many perceive a job as a source of both income and satisfaction despite a certain level of stress. I also suggest that people prioritize balancing their professional and personal responsibilities to lead more fulfilling lives.
