(IELTS Academic – 30/03/2024)
ANSWER (8.0+):
In recent years, it can be observed that people allocate an excessive amount of time to commute to employment and education. This problem results from poor traffic conditions and increased traveling distance. However, it can be comprehensively addressed by the joint efforts of governments and companies.
There are two compelling explanations for the unnecessarily high amount of time commuters spend on traveling. The prime one lies in unfavourable commuting conditions. In many cities, the number of vehicles including buses, cars and motorbikes has exceeded the capacity of road systems, causing serious congestion. These jams, in turn, prevent commuters from traveling to their desired destinations speedily. The other contributing factor is the increase in the distance between people’s home and workplaceor schools. Specifically, some city dwellers have moved to suburbs due to the unaffordability of houses and apartments in city centers where many schools or office buildings are located.
However, this issue can be addressed through government and corporate actions. First and foremost, the authorities should employ improved planning strategies. These initiatives might entail the construction of more efficient roads and networks. For instance, Singapore has allocated billions of dollars to developing a smart infrastructure with sensors strategically placed throughout the road network to monitor and control traffic flow. Over the years, this has eased traffic congestion and reduced citizens’ travel time. Another solution involves companies providing their workforce with rental assistance. Therefore, instead of living in suburban areas, employees can afford the exorbitant expenses of accommodation in proximity to their workplaces, thereby minimizing commute time.
In conclusion, the excessively high amount of time commuters spend on traveling can be explained by the decreasing traffic condition and the increasing travel distance. Nevertheless, it can be mitigated by governments upgrading road systems and corporations subsiding their employees’ rent to an extent. If these solutions are well-designed and executed, people are likely to reduce their commute hours and have time for other work responsibilities or personal growth.
