Question: The use of mobile phones is as antisocial as smoking. Smoking is banned in certain places so mobile phones should be banned like smoking. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
(IELTS Academic – 29/07/2023)
ANSWER (8.0+):
It is often debated whether a ban on mobile phone usage, akin to smoking restrictions in certain areas, should be implemented. Personally, I mostly support this proposition due to the disruptive nature of phone usage and the way it creates distance between people. However, an absolute prohibition may not be entirely practical.
The primary reason why I advocate for the implementation of phone prohibition in specific locations is the annoyance caused by these portable devices. Just as smoke from burning cigarettes can bother nearby non-smokers, it is undeniable that both ringtone sounds and bright screens from phones can be disruptive and distracting to others. Consequently, it is essential to enforce bans on phone usage in places like libraries and hospitals, where privacy and focus are prioritized.
Another justification supporting my endorsement of the policy to ban phones in particular places is their negative effect on social connections. Similar to how smokers might be avoided and isolated due to their foul breath, phone users can become excessively engrossed in their online conversations, disregarding the presence of others in their immediate surroundings. This not only hinders the formation of new relationships but also inhibits the development of intimate connections. Such an irksome reality leads me to advocate for limiting phone usage in social facilities, including restaurants and cafes.
However, I acknowledge that a stringent ban on mobile phones might not be justifiable. This is because numerous individuals depend on their phones to fulfill work obligations and other social responsibilities. If a complete prohibition were imposed in certain areas, they would lose vital connections and be unable to carry out essential tasks or provide assistance to those in need.
In conclusion, I support the idea of prohibiting phone usage for the most part in inappropriate areas due to its adverse effects on the overall social atmosphere and interpersonal relationships. Nevertheless, I understand the legitimate need for people to have their handheld devices with them at all times. Therefore, I suggest that public facilities consider investing in dedicated rooms or open spaces for phone users, similar to the accommodations currently provided for smokers.
