Question: In some countries, online shopping is replacing shopping in stores. Do you think it is a positive or negative development?
(IELTS Academic – 17/06/2023)
ANSWER (8.0+):
It is evident in some countries that physical stores are being replaced by online shops. I believe this replacement is mostly positive as e-commerce greatly benefits both shoppers and businesses, although it might lead to some job losses.
My first rationale is that the prevalence of online shopping offers consumers a superior buying experience. With a few clicks, they can easily navigate through products in various shops, comparing their reliability and prices before adding an item into their cart. After that, the e-commerce website’s payment system will guide them through simple steps to pay for their purchases which will be delivered right to their front door. This process is time-saving and effortless compared to the amount of time and effort required if it were done at physical stores.
Another argument to support the upsides of shopping in the virtual space is that it enables businesses to cut enormous costs. The reduction in outgoings encompasses significant construction expenses, salaries for store managers and staff as well as maintenance and security fees. These savings, in turn, allow companies to lower their prices and invest in marketing campaigns and product research that bolster their competitive advantages.
However, I concede that the disappearance of offline stores potentially leads to a decline in employment. It is due to the fact that these stores generally employ a great number of people working in a variety of positions, compared to a more streamlined online operation which can be robotized and potentially moved to a central location. If all of these employees were to be laid off, some people might become jobless and struggle to make a living, putting a strain on social welfare.
In conclusion, I am of the opinion that the fact that online shops are prevailing over offline ones is largely welcoming. This trend can be a milestone in boosting customers’ shopping experience while providing companies with financial advantages; however, its effect on employment can be rather negative. Given the fact that this trend is irreversible, those working in stores should proactively acquire new areas of knowledge such as online buying behaviours and overall user experience to be eligible for future vacancies in online commerce.
