Question: If old people are no longer physically, mentally or financially able to support themselves, younger family members should be legally responsible for supporting them. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
(IELTS Academic – 03/06/2023)
ANSWER (8.0+):
It has been asserted that young people should be obliged to assume the responsibility of providing support for their elderly relatives who face physical, mental and financial challenges. I mostly agree with this notion because this policy will ensure the elderly’s general well-being as well as fostering a caring society even though the social welfare system might also have to play its part.
The foremost rationale for my view is that this law will safeguard the safety and well-being of the elderly. If the government fails to introduce the law, old people who are unable to support themselves might be completely abandoned by their families. Many of them might experience loneliness or become homeless, facing a high risk of being robbed or abused. In other words, their physical and mental well-being can be seriously affected.
An additional reason to support my argument is that implementing legislation that mandates younger individuals to provide support for elderly family members can contribute to the development of a harmonious society. This law is a clear declaration and an exemplary demonstration of the commitment of national leaders to fostering a society in which care and respect are protected and encouraged. As a result, citizens are more inclined to embrace a compassionate lifestyle, extending their attention to not only older members in their own families but also others in their communities.
However, I concede that it might be the social welfare system that should bear the responsibility of taking care of the elderly. These individuals have contributed to the country’s economic development by paying various taxes, such as value-added tax and income tax, which collectively provide the financial resources for the establishment of social welfare programs. Therefore, it is imperative for these programs to assume full legal responsibility in providing the necessary care for elderly individuals in need.
In conclusion, I partially believe that a law demanding the care of younger people to seniors in their families is necessary. It is because it helps protect the old people from serious threats as well as promotes care and respect in society, although taxpayer funded social security also has a place. In fact, all governments and lawmakers must act more urgently to identify and eliminate legal barriers that hinder the timely implementation of this law.
